Hand Drumming in Singapore

On Monday 19th Nov, I attempted the advanced test and I have passed! Yippee!

It is the first performance test that I have gone through in about 18 years... and the first one ever with an instrument! Crap I was so nervous!

My heart was in my throat the whole time, and I was so nervous that I had to restart a couple of rhythms a few times. Fortunately we do not get penalised for that!

The grading was based on tempo, technique and interpretation of the rhythm, and Kelvin gave feedback at the end, which I found really valuable.

It was a good opportunity to ask some questions as well, seeing as we don't do one-on-one with Kelvin very often... and to talk technique with him was a good opportunity.

I would suggest that you listen to the accompaniment dunun rhythms and try and play along with it, as it was something that I hadn't done as much as just straight practice.

Feel free to post here with any questions that you have... and good luck in your own tests!!

Hi William, missed you at the last performance! At any rate this was something I wanted to do... and it's funny that I'm reading this comment many months later - my husband was asking me just last night why I wanted to go to the advanced level. It is a hobby and does relax me, however I LOVE playing the djembe, and wish that I had more time to practice and get to a stage where I could be more competent - and I guess that's what is driving me at the moment.

The test was a small sacrifice to take it up a notch for me!

Hope to see you at the next performance!

Mucho Congrats, Steph. You must be so proud. I think I'll prefer to remain an "intermediate" student for the next decade or three. For a hobby that is supposed to relax us, this sound so stressful.
